Seamless, flawless transportation. introductionthe toyota camry is the best-selling car in america, the crown jewel of cars in the auto industry. Toyota tells us the name 'camry' comes from kan-muri, which in japanese means 'crown.' that seems appropriate given that the camry outsells such popular gems as the honda accord and ford taurus. the camry appears to be a perfect transportation appliance, flawlessly performing its duties, never annoying its owner. It rides smoothly, softly over beat-up city streets. The interior is ergonomically excellent, with big climate and audio knobs that are easy to adjust. The seats are comfortable. the toyota camry was all-new last year. A longer wheelbase brought significantly increased rear-seat legroom. All models now come with remote keyless entry, while the xle model adds fog lights, and a six-disc cd changer for its jbl audio system. Either way, it comes with air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, power locks and remote keyless entry, a 60/40 split rear seat, and visor vanity mirrors. se is a sportier version of the le. Higher-rate springs, shocks, and anti-roll bars contribute to crisper handling, along with higher-effort steering and bigger wheels and tires. Outside, black trim at the front end, a spoiler at the rear, and unique black pearl badging distinguish the se. A three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and lots of bright trim add zing to the interior. Se lists for $20,310 with the manual gearbox, $21,140 with the automatic. the cushiest camry is the xle, featuring luxury appointments such as wood-grain trim, power driver and passenger seats, automatic air conditioning, an alarm system, a cargo net, and a rear-window sunshade. All-new last year, the v6 develops 192 horsepower at 5300 rpm, and 209 pounds-feet at 4400. Both engines are all aluminum for light weight. the le v6 lists for $22,260; the se v6 for $23,700; and the xle v6 for $25,405. Look for an all-new solara to debut as 2004 model. . walkaroundthe toyota camry was totally redesigned last year, but the new look did not stray too far from that of previous models. Ford lost quite a few sales before retreating to a safer design. so while toyota claims to have put more excitement into the current camry, in truth it looks a lot like the old camry. Ironically, the most-changed elements are the rear deck and taillights, and these have a distinctly taurus flavor. The front of the camry appears to have a bit of lincoln ls in it, thanks to the way the grille cuts into the top edge of the front bumper. the camry does present a more sculptured appearance, with slightly flared wheel arches and a distinct dual crease line in the hood, the latter leading nicely into the grille. To some extent its smooth lines camouflage its height; the current car stands two inches taller than the pre-2002 model. . interiorthe toyota camry has a comfortable interior with controls that are simple and easy to operate. Everything is laid out simply. radio and climate controls are mounted high in the center of the dash for easy access. Three big knobs mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard are used to manually control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning on se and le models. Xle models get automatic climate control with a smooth tactile feel that reminds us of lexus, which set the modern standard. The stereo uses big buttons and knobs that are easy to operate, whether scanning for radio stations or moving between songs on a cd. A navigation system is available for the xle. We found the audio quality poor on the le's optional jbl system. the instruments are located in a relatively small pod right in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches. camry's dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have managed to make the passenger-side air bag invisible. a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. The parking brake on the le and se is also located in the center console, whereas the xle gets a foot-operated parking brake. rear-seat passengers will find the accommodations quite pleasant for a mid-size passenger car. Head- and legroom have increased compared to the previous camry. The rear seat splits 60/40, allowing long objects to pass through from the trunk, although the opening is smaller than it might be. The trunk itself is a decent size and shape. Gooseneck hinges steal valuable space, but are hidden under a cover, reducing the chance that they will damage trunk contents as the lid is closed. . driving impressiontoyota knows how to build quiet cars with a comfortable ride. Toyota's lexus division has excelled in this area and this expertise appears to have worked its way over to the camry. Engines are quieter than in pre-2002 models, while an innovative engine mounting system further reduces vibration. There is nothing untoward or strange about the camry; it does everything just right. An enthusiast driver would complain that it lacks character, but for the average driver that's a plus. The 2. 4-liter inline-4 is inexpensive and fuel-efficient and provides plenty of power. Computer logic controls the automatic transmission; the car can tell when it is going up hill or down hill and the transmission shifts gears accordingly. It can hold a lower gear longer when necessary to avoid the annoying shifting up and down that occurs in some automatics. the ride is pleasant, verging on luxurious, with enough cushioning to make passengers feel comfortable. The steering is light but not sloppy. That means it is not connected directly to the engine by a cable; instead, it activates a sensor connected to a computer, just like the controls in modern aircraft. One advantage of this arrangement is that the optional vehicle skid control system can take over the throttle in an emergency and apply just the right amount of throttle and braking to keep the vehicle on a more stable path. . summarytoyota admits that while few people aspire to own a camry, lots of people recommend a camry to their friends. The camry is what's known as a safe buy. It is in many ways an unremarkable car, except for its total lack of identifiable flaws. It toyota has tried hard to make the latest camry a little more exciting while at the same time making sure it will still transport its occupants from a to b and back without any drama, nor any worries about reliability, year in and year out. so the toyota camry is not be as exciting as the nissan altima or volkswagen passat. The world's best-selling truck continues to evolve into a sedan with a handy bed attached. all 2003 models get a new noise control package, 75 improvements in all, according to ford, for a 10-percent quieter ride. Audio system choices now include a cassette/cd player and an in-dash six-cd changer. All 2003 f-150s now have the latch (lower anchors and tethers for children) systems as standard equipment. a new heritage edition f-150 commemorates 100 years of ford motor company history. An f-150 stx edition is newly available on regular cab and supercab xl and xlt. King ranch models get chrome tubular running boards, a six-disc in-dash cd changer and woodgrain bezels. . lineupthere is something for everybody at ford's f-150 store; they've made sure of that. Three engines are available: standard engine for the base xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that makes 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and xlt, standard in all others. No light-duty diesel engine is available for f-150 models. The three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can also be had as king ranch models, with leather captain's chairs, a premium audio system, and unique badging. supercrew features rear seats that can quickly be converted into covered cargo space. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5-1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup into tight urban or country spaces. The lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system. air conditioning is standard equipment on almost all f-150s and electronic automatic temperature control is now standard on lariat, king ranch and supercrew models. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all models for 2003. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is standard on xlts. the f-150 model matrix is huge, and includes some specialty models. The high-performance svt lightning packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase. also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year. . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It's rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features. the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck. . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle. the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort. all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. Hyundai comes of age with new gt model. introductionno excuses, disclaimers or frequent reminders about the low price and great warranty. Hyundai's new elantra gt is a good car on its own merits. how so? On the functionality scale, this package is hard to beat. consider the most powerful standard engine in the subcompact class, and a standard-equipment list as long or longer than cars that cost $10. 000-$15,000 more. The elantra gt's interior is nicely finished. Measured by build quality, it meets or beats most of its competitors. The new gt model essentially replaces the elantra wagon, which was dropped from hyundai's 2001 lineup. No real problem there. The most obvious difference between the two is the gt's five-door body style. both elantra models have an impressive array of standard features, including air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks and a center console with armrest. The standard safety features are anything but economy grade: front and front-passenger side-impact airbags, rear headrests and three-point harnesses at all five seating positions. still, the elantra gt expands on the gls sedan's standard-equipment list. The five-door gt was fashioned in the tradition of compact european sport sedans, and in that spirit comes with a firmer sport-tuned suspension and five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. Yet there is an automatic available. Beyond the mats, the only factory options available on the gt are a slide-and-tilt power moonroof 650), antilock brakes with electronic front-wheel traction control 1175, including the moonroof) and a cargo net 38). the warranty, by the way, is one of the best available. The basic warranty lasts five years or 60,000 miles for the original owner, with free roadside assistance throughout. The engine and transmission are warranted for 10 years, 100,0000 miles, and hyundai protects elantra from rust-through for five years or 100,000 miles. walkaroundelantra sedan was restyled for 2001, and the newer gt shares much with the gls sedan. From the front doors forward they are identical, with a distinctive chrome-lipped grille and prominent twin trapezoid headlamps angled back in a black background. Last year's design changes did more than improve the looks. Elantra's drag coefficient was reduced to improve fuel economy and lower wind noise inside. New headlights cast light in a wider pattern. from the mid pillar (b-pillar) back, the gt is distinct from the gls. The gt model's glass area is more expansive and airy, and its roof trails back into the rear hatch, fastback style, rather than dropping suddenly toward the trunk. The hatch ends with the small lip of a spoiler above the taillights and rear bumper. The wheelbase was stretched 2. 3 inches to 102. 7, making more leg room inside, and headroom was increased both front and rear. Just as significantly, the engine is mounted with hydraulic attachments in a new front subframe, greatly reducing the amount of drivetrain vibration that reaches the cabin. interioroften, inexpensive cars try to make up for their economy ambience with strange, garish interior design. The elantra gt's interior is subdued, clean and efficient, with the gauge binnacle and control panel sweeping in front of the driver and down toward the center console. the gauges themselves are backlit with a purplish light. It's interesting, and the speedometer and standard tach are quite legible at night or in full mid-afternoon sunshine. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning are now adjusted with rotary controls, rather than the cheaper, more difficult sliding type, and the dials are set in the preferred location-below, rather than above, the stereo. The stereo buttons are on the small side (we've rarely found buttons that are too big), but they are as large and easy to operate as those in some more expensive cars (the volkswagen jetta, for example). Light, wiper and cruise control switches are stalk mounted. There's very little hard plastic in the elantra gt, and the soft stuff has a richer feel than we've been conditioned to expect in cars of this ilk. the front seats are larger than before, neither too soft (lacking proper support) nor too hard (bordering on painful). The driver's seat is height adjustable both front and rear, and both front seats have adjustable lumbar support. The front shoulder belts are height adjustable---a feature shorter people will appreciate-and the center position in back has a combination lap/shoulder belt (the class standard remains lap belt only). With the rear seat up, there's room enough in the cargo compartment for beach gear or the sundry kid stuff required for a day trip. The same with plywood sheets cut to 40 x 70 inches, including the remnants. With the hatch tied partway open, the possibilities include full sheets of plywood or a 27-inch tv in its carton. And elantra doesn't suffer from the bane of some five-doors: a flexing, rattling body. It's decently screwed together and satisfactorily solid. driving impressionwe drove the elantra gt as the typical owner might--back and forth to the work, for family outings and trips to the home-improvement store. The car didn't hiccup once, and we were never dissatisfied. for years hyundai borrowed its engine designs from other manufacturers. Major improvements for 2001 were intended to reduce mechanical noise and control vibration. They include a cast aluminum oil sump, a stiffer engine block and eight crankshaft counterweights. with 140 horsepower and 133 pounds-feet of torque, there's more than enough power to hustle the 2600-pound elantra gt through traffic, pass with confidence or drive through mountain passes faster than posted speeds. We estimate 0-60 mph times in the mid eight-second range-respectable performance in any subcompact. but beware. There isn't much grunt at lower engine speeds. Most of elantra's power comes in the last 2000 revs before the 6400-rpm redline. Enthusiast drivers prefer to do exactly that. Some cars that cost $25,000 don't have speed-sensitive steering or a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension. The power steering requires only a light touch during parking maneuvers or in tight quarters, yet it firms up at travel speeds and still gives the driver a good idea of how well the front tires are gripping. The rear suspension keeps the rear tires firmly on the pavement, even on bumpy roads, and helps keep the rear of the car from bouncing around. the net result in the elantra gt is maneuverability in traffic, secure, reasonably precis. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is standard on xlts. the f-150 model matrix is huge, and includes some specialty models. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase. also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year. . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It's rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features. the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck. . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle. the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort. all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road.
