2003 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All the pickup basics and a harley-davidson edition to boot. introductionquieter and more carlike than ever, the ford f-150 continues to be the light-duty pickup truck by which all others are measured. The world's best-selling truck continues to evolve into a sedan with a handy bed attached.  all 2003 models get a new noise control package, 75 improvements in all, according to ford, for a 10-percent quieter ride. Audio system choices now include a cassette/cd player and an in-dash six-cd changer. All 2003 f-150s now have the latch (lower anchors and tethers for children) systems as standard equipment.  a new heritage edition f-150 commemorates 100 years of ford motor company history. An f-150 stx edition is newly available on regular cab and supercab xl and xlt. King ranch models get chrome tubular running boards, a six-disc in-dash cd changer and woodgrain bezels.  . lineupthere is something for everybody at ford's f-150 store; they've made sure of that. Three engines are available: standard engine for the base xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that makes 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and xlt, standard in all others. No light-duty diesel engine is available for f-150 models. The three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can also be had as king ranch models, with leather captain's chairs, a premium audio system, and unique badging.  supercrew features rear seats that can quickly be converted into covered cargo space. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5-1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup into tight urban or country spaces. The lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  air conditioning is standard equipment on almost all f-150s and electronic automatic temperature control is now standard on lariat, king ranch and supercrew models. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all models for 2003. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is standard on xlts.  the f-150 model matrix is huge, and includes some specialty models. The high-performance svt lightning packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase.  also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year.  . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It's rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features.  the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. 1994 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductiontest driving the most popular model of the best-selling full-size pickups is a piece of cake .. In evaluating the latest edition of the ford f-150, there can be a tendency to overlook its many assets because they are so familiar. Also, there can be a tendency to overlook the refining and honing that have been applied to make a good pickup even better.  we tried the 1994 ford flareside supercab f-150 in the 4x4 version and fell into the trap of taking the familiar for granted. It was predictable in doing what ford pickups have been doing since they took over full-size sales leadership 16 years ago-satisfying their owners by performing well, handling nicely and delivering great value in a lasting, reliable manner. It was difficult because we kept slipping into a 'that's the way it's supposed to be' frame of mind. But we recalled the enthusiasm of the guys on the loading dock and tried anew to appreciate fully this pickup. walkaroundstyling is one area of significant change. The familiar upright stance of its full-size ford pickup has been modified with some softening of lines, rounding of edges and flaring of the wheel cutouts. Mirrors, grille, bumpers and wheels were bright metal.  flareside styling included practical steps fore and aft the rear fenders. These are great for loading and unloading. Another great convenience feature also adds to the softer look-a molded running board or step under both doors. Full-size pickups, particularly 4wd full-size pickups, usually require some clambering to enter and exit.  the pickup bed, true to the flareside type, had no intrusions in it for clean, easy loading and unloading. The box has the standard double-wall construction. The xlt package included the new convertible console front seat, which is basically three individual front seats. The outer two have built-in headrests and are reclining and adjustable. Two passengers are going to be a lot more comfortable than three. All gauges, controls and switches are sensibly placed with one exception: controls for the driver's power seat are somewhat blocked by the door storage panel. The standard driver-side air bag, new on full-size ford pickups for 1994, is mounted in the steering wheel hub. The hub also carries the cruise control.  visibility is excellent. The glass and mirrors offered great vision all around the truck. Pickup mirrors seemed to get knocked out of adjustment a lot, and manually adjusting the right-hand mirror is a chore. Another complaint is that the small quarter windows in the cab do not open. True, the back window is a slider that can provide circulation, but reaching way back to open it for some fresh air is a stretch. It would be much easier to merely pop open a limited-access quarter window. driving impressionfull-size ford pickups are solidly built, and that's the way they ride solidly. Ford spends a lot of time and money proclaiming the ride and handling advantages of its twin i-beam front suspension. We can only say that it seems to work well. In 4x4 ford pickups, it's called twin traction beam, which means that each front wheel is supported by an axle arm and coil spring and reacts to road surfaces independently. This has become standard full-size and midsize pickup braking. It has multi-port electronic fuel injection, a computer-controlled fuel/air mixture feeding the engine for optimal performance under a wide range of climate, driving and load conditions. The 4wd system had a two-speed transfer case with electronic shifting, an option available only on the f-150. As a 4x4, it sat up high. The expanse of glass and the elevated seating enabled us to look down at traffic from a serene, quiet environment. Performance was great; this engine has ample power for cruising with a load in the bed or a decent-sized trailer on the back. It's great to look at. Even better to drive or ride in. And it performs like any full-size ford should--solid ride, handling and performance.  one thing: tricked-out full-size pickups don't come cheap. But it still adds up to a light-truck package with a price not to be taken lightly.  nonetheless, it looks to us as though ford has made all the right moves to maintain its full-size pickup sales leadership. But we appreciate that chevy concedes nothing and has some great full-size trucks to choose from. Cruise Control

2000 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. There are reasons why it's the best-selling vehicle in the world. introductionford motor company has made billions of dollars of profit by providing a pickup truck for every conceivable family, recreational and commercial use, with the broadest possible spectrum of models. Over the years, ford has continued to lead the pack in overall design, with more and more passenger car features folded into the truck mix every year until it's hard to distinguish between the two from the inside.  for 2000, ford carries on the tradition. Changes include a more comfortable flip-up 40/60 rear seat and an improved 18-degree rear seating angle in the f-150 supercab. A new overhead console and left- and right-side visor vanity mirrors are standard on xlt and lariat f-150 pickups, optional on xl models. A driver's-side keypad entry system is available on lariat models. Chromed steel wheels and 17-inch tires, previously available on 4x4 models only, are available on 4x2 models as well. New colors are island blue clearcoat metallic and chestnut clearcoat metallic. F-250 models also offer a 6. 8-liter v10 engine and a power stroke diesel v8. It is rounder, friendlier and much more like a car than the competition. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The new chevy and gmc trucks are only a year old, but they already look a bit dated next to the ford, which was mildly restyled last year. The dodge ram has lost its luster, too, compared to the slick f-150. interiorwe find the ford f-150 interior superior in flavor to the gm and dodge competition. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. Even in this f-150 xlt standard cab, which comes without the rear seats and without the extra rear doors, there is plenty of room to stretch out. The xlt has new seats this year with cloth covering, a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort.  obviously, all standard pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. But since we do a lot more of the former and very little of the latter, we like the high ride. We especially like the ford f-150 because, unlike the dodge, chevrolet or gmc, the aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering and parking as well as dealing with traffic ahead. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. 1997 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The new crown prince of pickups. introductionit could be called reinventing perfection. For 18 years the ford f-150 has been the best selling pickup in the u. S., and for the past 13 years running it has also been the best selling vehicle in the u. Not the taurus, not the accord. The front end bears little resemblance to previous noses, although the oval ford logo immediately identifies the truck. The grille opening is changed, the headlights have a new shape, and the lower bumper has been redesigned. Note here that the f-150 comes in so many permutations that what is said about a design specific on one may have little to do with another. The tail features new-look taillights that are inset and wrap around.  overall, the truck has surprisingly rounded lines. Ford says that vehicle ruggedness traditionally had been characterized by angular forms. But all those sharp edges played havoc with aerodynamics, which meant lower fuel economy and more wind noise. So ford designers went for a look that was more aero, but still conveyed ruggedness. And why they buy it. Ford knows f-150 owners very well indeed, and has broken them down into major groups.  know anybody who fits one of these categories? He buys a regular cab flareside xl and represents one sale in 10. Also one in 10 sales. Next is established and stable with kids in school and wife back to work. He buys a higher-series xlt, maybe a supercab. Three of 10 sales, so an important customer. When this guy ages, he enters free-spirited senior land, and he goes for the top of the line xlt or lariat and maybe supercab. He's good for another three in 10 sales. When ford was doing its marketing homework in preparation for the new truck, time and time again the researchers heard owners of extended cab trucks plead for more room behind the seats, and easier access. Which is precisely what they'll get in the new truck with the new passenger-side third door option.  like all pickups, the new f-150 is available in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is a short and long wheelbase styleside regular cab, a short and a long styleside supercab, a short flareside regular cab and short flareside supercab. The flaresides have aerodynamic lower moldings, a side step and other cosmetic features.  the standard engine for the new truck is a new 4. 2-liter v6 that produces a hefty 205 hp at 4400 rpm, which is a considerable advantage over the competing standard engines. Chevrolet's c/k has 180 hp, the dodge ram has 170 hp.  the ford v6 also produces 255 lb.-ft. Of torque, with 92 percent of that available at 1500 rpm. That means low-end acceleration and more trailer-towing capacity. A 4. 6-liter with 210 hp is available now, with a more powerful 5. 4-liter v8 due this fall. The smaller v8's advantage over the standard six is more torque: 290 lb.-ft. Vs. 255.  all engines come with a 5-speed manual standard, with a 4-speed electronically-controlled automatic optional. All models are available with 4-wheel drive.  after decades of twin i-beam, the f-150 finally has a new front suspension, which ford describes as upper short and long arm (sla). On 4x2 trucks, the sla suspension uses coil springs that react against a forged upper arm and a cast spindle, with control arms bolted to the frame. At the rear is a solid axle with a leaf spring on top of the axle.  the 4x4 truck us. interiorthe interior of the f-150 is far more car-like than before, surprisingly so, in light of the truck's rugged (ford would never say macho) image. The basic instrument cluster contains gauges for the important functions, but no tachometer. The usual controls are to the right in a soft-cornered rectangle. The radio has a real on/off knob, but tunes with a rocker switch.  organic shapes abound-door handle, glove box handle, ashtray door, vents. The standard seat is a 3-person bench with a 40/60 split bench standard on some models. There is increased storage area behind the seat and more clearance for the optional reclining seats.  the supercab has more rear-seat leg room than the previous f-150. A split bench rear seat is available. The lower cushion of the rear seat can be folded into a flat floor.  nice touches include extra-large cupholders, a second power point on the instrument panel for laptop computers and the like, an optional driver's side secondary visor shade, a glove box handle oriented toward the driver, adjustable d-rings for greater ease of shoulder belt adjustment, two large coat hooks and a passenger grab handle.  f-150 models are available in standard, xl, xlt and lariat interiors. Never has a full-size pickup been so refined. Ford has taken the truck out and given it a car-like feel in this respect, just as the designers did with the interior.  the ride is smooth and motion free. In its place, a compliant ride that soaks up road irregularities. For anyone with a lot of truck time, it's almost spooky the way it goes down the road. It's also quiet in there. The new rounded shape did its job in that department--no wind noise.  typically, a pickup's box and frame are designed separately, then bolted together. This time around, the two systems were designed to work together. The result is an absence of squeaks and rattles, even on rough terrain. The truck has a solid feel that has nothing to do with ruggedness. This one is built to endure.  both engines are strong, with the increased torque of the v8 obvious in a back-to-back comparison. But without that comparison, no one would likely sell the v6 short. Both are smooth, with the v8 a bit quieter.  the most remarkable thing about these engines is how much power, particularly torque, ford has been able to extract from relatively small displacements. Both engines are based on ford's highly successful 4. 6-liter modular v8, used in several passenger cars. For truck use, the 4. 6 induction system was retuned for stronger low-end performance. Overhead cam engines aren't part of american truck tradition, but we don't think anyone will have any trouble adapting to this one. summaryit's obvious the f-150 has been a good truck. But ford decided keeping its top spot meant making a good thing better, and showed confidence in also making it quite a bit different in the process. There may seem to be a bit of bet-hedging here, since ford will keep the 1996 model on sale through most of the year, but that's only because of the changeover required at two more plants.  will ford's new f-150 encounter resistance? Only time will tell. The north american truck of the year jury gave the f-150 top honors this year, and we think they called it right. This one's a winner. assembled innorfolk, va; kansas city, mo. options as testedair conditioning, am/fm radio, chrome bumper, chrome grille, tilt steering. model testedf-150 styleside.
